The IT Health Check: What Our Assessments Reveal
An IT health check is a bit like a service for your car — it catches the small problems before they become expensive ones. Here’s what we usually find.
An IT health check is a bit like getting your car serviced. Nothing may feel wrong, but a proper look under the bonnet often turns up things that would have caused a breakdown at the worst possible moment. When we run assessments for small businesses, the same handful of issues come up again and again.
Backups that aren’t actually working
This is the big one. Plenty of businesses believe they’re backed up — until they need to restore and find the backup stopped running months ago, or never covered the important data in the first place. A backup you haven’t tested isn’t a backup; it’s a hope. Sorting this is the heart of backup and disaster recovery.
Updates and patches left undone
Out-of-date operating systems, software and plugins are the single most common way attackers get in. On a lot of the machines we assess, critical updates are months behind. Keeping on top of this is dull, which is exactly why it gets forgotten — and exactly why it’s worth handing off.
Weak spots in security
Shared passwords, no two-factor authentication, old accounts still active for people who left, and firewalls left on default settings. None of it feels urgent until it is. A sensible baseline — along the lines of the government-backed Cyber Essentials scheme — closes most of the easy doors.
Ageing hardware running critical jobs
There’s often one old machine quietly doing something important, with no replacement plan and no warranty. When it goes — and it will — it takes a chunk of the business with it. Spotting these before they fail turns an emergency into a planned upgrade.
No clear picture of what you’ve got
Many businesses simply don’t have an up-to-date list of their own kit, software licences and logins. When something breaks, half the delay is working out what you even have.
None of this is dramatic — that’s the point
A health check isn’t about scaremongering. It’s about knowing where you stand and fixing the cheap things before they become expensive ones. It pairs naturally with ongoing managed IT, so the issues we find actually stay fixed.
