Why your Google Business Profile matters more than your website (sometimes)

For a lot of local searches, people never reach your website. Your Google Business Profile is what they see and act on, so it’s worth getting right.

Small businesses often pour time and money into their website while ignoring something free that frequently matters more: their Google Business Profile. It’s the listing that shows up when someone searches for a local business, the box on the right with your name, map pin, hours, photos and reviews. For a lot of local searches, that listing does more work than your website ever will. Here’s why, and how to make the most of it.

Why it often beats the website

Think about how people actually search locally. Someone types “electrician near me” or “accountant in Bridgnorth” into their phone. What they see first isn’t a list of websites; it’s a map with a handful of local businesses, their ratings, their opening hours and a button to call. Many people get everything they need right there and phone the business, without ever visiting a website.

So for local, ready-to-buy searches, your Google Business Profile is often the storefront customers actually see. If your listing is thin, out of date, or missing, you’re invisible at the exact moment someone’s ready to choose. A great website doesn’t help if you never appear in that map box.

Claim it and fill it in properly

The first step is simply claiming your profile, which is free, at Google. Once you have control, fill in everything, because a complete profile ranks better and answers more questions:

  • Accurate name, address and phone number, matching what’s on your website exactly.
  • Correct opening hours, including bank holidays. Wrong hours are worse than none; a wasted trip loses a customer for good.
  • The right categories for what you do, as these strongly affect which searches you show up for.
  • A clear description of your services in plain terms.
  • Real photos of your work, premises or team. Listings with genuine photos get noticeably more clicks than those without.

Reviews are the part that really moves the needle

Reviews do two jobs at once. They persuade people, because most of us trust a business with a steady stream of good reviews far more than one with none. And they help you rank, because Google favours businesses that are clearly active and well regarded.

The simplest way to get reviews is to ask. When a customer’s happy, ask them politely to leave one, and make it easy by sending the link. Reply to reviews too, both good and bad. A calm, professional reply to a critical review often impresses future customers more than the complaint puts them off. Never buy fake reviews; it’s against the rules and it’s usually obvious.

Keep it alive

A profile isn’t set-and-forget. Google notices activity, and so do customers. Post the occasional update, add new photos now and then, keep your hours current, and answer the questions people ask through the listing. It only takes a few minutes here and there, and an active profile consistently outperforms a neglected one.

So should you skip the website?

No. Your website still matters, especially for anyone weighing up a bigger decision, wanting detail, or checking you’re the real thing. The point isn’t website versus profile; it’s that both matter and the profile is too often ignored. For the cost of nothing but a bit of attention, a good Google Business Profile can bring in a steady flow of local customers who’d otherwise never have found you.
